Ceramic Design & Manufacture

Ceramic Design - an art form in which clay is used as the medium of expression. Students are taught the three basic hand techniques which are pinching, coiling and slabbing as well as throwing on the wheel. There is a strong relationship between Ceramic Design and Sculpture. Both can use the same media and similar forms, and students are encouraged to explore the borders between the two.

Target Participants

complete beginners and ceramic artists honing their skills.

Course 8 weeks for 3 hours per week/ per term

Russell Road Campus Creative Industries Studios (Secure parking avialable)

From 09:00 - 12:00 Tuesday mornings ( if number permit)

       17:00 - 20:00  Tuesday evenings

Course Structure

Personal adornment in the form of jewellery is one of the earliest forms of human endeavour. As a country richly endowed with raw materials it is of paramount importance that we process these materials ourselves. A process of adding value through the hand.

1-3 pieces completed during the course: ring, necklace or bracelet

  • Silver:                                                        Making/ using silver wire/silver plate
  • Copper/ Brass:                                          Using Brass or Copper plate
  • Basic Gold - Smithing Skills:                        Melting/ refining         sawing

                                                                             Soldering                    using a rolling mill

                                                                             Filing/ sanding using a hammer 

                                                                             Using measuring equipment

Making Jewellry with: wire, plate, copper, brass and silver

Target participants:

- Grade 12 pupils, who might be considering a career in Jewellery design & Manufacture.

- Art Students, fashion design students or sculpture students.

- Working people who would like to do this as a hobby or for Entrepreneurship purposes.

Course:

- 8 weeks at 3 h/ week

Venue:

- Russell Road campus, Jewellery studio (secure parking)

Times: From 09:00 - 12:00 Tuesday mornings (if numbers permit) or please indicate on form
