Introduction

Meet Ms Babalwa Ngowapi, a proud graduate of Port Elizabeth TVET College. Originally from East London, she relocated to Port Elizabeth to study and has since made the city her home.

Academic Journey at Port Elizabeth TVET College

Ms Ngowapi began her Marketing Management studies in 2012 and completed them in 2014. She describes her college experience as “wonderful and life changing.”

Encouraged by her cousin and inspired by a passionate marketing lecturer, she chose the Marketing field after learning about its opportunities, challenges, and real-world relevance.

Personal Growth and Overcoming Challenges

While balancing a part-time job and her studies, she made the tough decision to resign and focus on her education a choice that yielded long-term benefits.

During her time at the college, she developed confidence, built strong friendships, and received invaluable mentorship from her lecturers. Once naturally shy, she overcame her fear of public speaking through presentations and practical learning.

Appreciation for Lecturers

Ms Ngowapi credits all her lecturers for contributing to her academic and personal development. She regards them as mentors who shaped her into the professional she is today.

Further Studies and Career Development

After completing her diploma, she undertook an internship at Algoa Brick as a sales intern. She later enrolled at Nelson Mandela University, earning a National Diploma in Marketing, Advanced Diploma in Marketing, and a BCom Honours in Business Management (2015–2022).

University life taught her independence and self-reliance, contrasting with the close-knit environment of the TVET College.

Challenges During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Her most challenging academic year was 2021 during her Honours studies. The shift to online learning was overwhelming, but with strong support from her supervisor and time to regain focus, she successfully completed her qualification.

Value of a TVET Education

Ms Ngowapi believes TVET colleges offer hands-on, practical training that prepares students for the workplace. She credits the College for giving her a strong marketing foundation, real-world exposure, and academic confidence that helped her excel at university and earn bursaries.

Advice for Current Students

Her key message to students is the importance of discipline. She believes it is essential for meeting deadlines, staying focused, and achieving long-term goals both academically and professionally.

Future Aspirations

Looking ahead, Ms Ngowapi hopes to continue her academic journey. Within the next five to ten years, she intends to pursue a Master’s degree and ultimately a PhD.
