Introduction

Meet Mr Sigqibo Hlwati, a proud graduate of Port Elizabeth TVET College and the founder of HB CRAFTS, a business specialising in sustainable indoor and outdoor furniture. Originally from Goshen Village near Queenstown, he now uses his technical training and creativity to promote eco-friendly craftsmanship.

Academic Journey at PE TVET College

Mr Hlwati completed a programme in Electrical Engineering with Renewable Energy and Technology at Iqhayiya Campus. As part of the first intake for this specialised stream, he studied from 2015 to 2017. He describes his experience as educational and inspiring, crediting the College for strong practical and theoretical training.

Motivation to Study and Skills Developed

Driven by a desire to gain employable, practical skills, he chose the TVET model for its real-world application and alignment with his interest in engineering and sustainability.

During his studies, he gained valuable technical and professional skills, including project planning, structural design, teamwork, problem-solving, communication, leadership, and time management—skills that now support his entrepreneurial journey.

Impactful Lecturers and Academic Support

He recalls several lecturers who significantly shaped his development. Their mentorship encouraged him to think like a professional, pay attention to detail, and pursue high standards in his work.

Overcoming Challenges

Despite financial constraints and limited resources, he remained focused and determined. By working part-time and taking advantage of all learning opportunities, he strengthened both his practical abilities and problem-solving skills.

Early Career and Practical Exposure

After graduating, Mr Hlwati joined a local NGO, where he gained valuable hands-on experience. This exposure helped him translate his college training into real-world application.

Entrepreneurship and HB CRAFTS

Today, he runs HB CRAFTS, founded in 2020 and specialising in handcrafted, eco-friendly products made from recycled and natural materials. The business creates garden furniture, décor, and sustainable installations for homes and corporate spaces. He also collaborates with a local university on green-focused projects promoting sustainability and creative design.

Value of a TVET Education

He believes the greatest strength of TVET education is its practical focus. The combination of theory and hands-on training gave him the confidence to start his business and produce high-quality work. He sees TVET programmes as equipping young people with job-ready skills that support both employment and entrepreneurship.

Advice to Students

Mr Hlwati encourages current students to stay curious, proactive, and committed. He advises them to take practical training seriously, build meaningful relationships, and create opportunities through consistent effort and hard work.

Future Plans

In the next five years, he aims to grow HB CRAFTS into a recognised brand for sustainable design. Over the next decade, he hopes to establish a training hub that empowers young people with skills in recycling, construction, and entrepreneurship.

Closing Message

Mr Hlwati’s journey shows how determination, passion, and the right skills can build something meaningful from the ground up. While TVET education laid the foundation, his perseverance enabled him to create a purpose-driven business that supports both people and the environment.
