TVET SUCCESS STORY – STUDENT ENTREPRENEUR SPOTLIGHT

We are incredibly proud to celebrate our outstanding Dower Campus student, Tia Nzuzo, who was crowned the EC Regional Entrepreneurship Competition winner in the Business Idea category. Originally from New Brighton in Gqeberha, Tia is a passionate and ambitious Transport and Logistics Student.

With a strong interest in entrepreneurship, Tia is passionate about finding creative solutions to everyday challenges and is determined to build a successful business of her own.

We asked Tia to share her thoughts on this remarkable achievement, her journey as a young entrepreneur, her innovative business idea, Tiny Shields, and her aspirations for the future.

1. Congratulations on your achievement! How did you feel when you were announced as the winner of the Regional Entrepreneurship Competition?

Winning the Regional Entrepreneurship Competition was an unforgettable experience. It showed me that my business idea has potential and gave me even more confidence to further develop Tiny Shields. I am grateful for the opportunity and for the recognition of my idea.

2. Tell us about your business idea. What inspired you to start this business, and what problem does your business aim to solve?

Tiny Shields was inspired by my observation that there are limited deodorant products specifically designed for children. I wanted to develop a product that is gentle, age-appropriate and suitable for children, while helping them manage body odour and feel fresh, comfortable and confident.

3. What makes your business idea unique? What sets your business apart from other businesses offering similar products or services?

Tiny Shields is focused specifically on the needs of children. It is not simply a smaller version of an adult deodorant. The concept is designed with both children and their parents in mind, offering a personal-care product that aims to help children feel fresh and confident.

4. What does winning the Regional Entrepreneurship Competition mean to you? How has this achievement impacted you personally and as a young entrepreneur?

Winning the competition means a great deal to me because it shows that people believe in my idea and its potential. The achievement has increased my confidence and motivated me to continue learning, improving Tiny Shields and working towards turning it into a successful business.

5. What are your plans for growing and developing your business? Where would you like to see your business in the next few years?

I would like to see Tiny Shields grow into a recognised children’s personal-care brand. My goal is to start locally, build a strong customer base and eventually expand across South Africa, with the possibility of entering other markets in the future.

6. What advice would you give to other TVET students who have a business idea? What would you encourage them to do to turn their ideas into successful businesses?

My advice to other TVET students is to never underestimate themselves because they are studying at a TVET college. Make use of the skills, knowledge and opportunities available to you. Believe in your ideas, be willing to learn and do not be afraid to put yourself out there. Every successful business starts with an idea and the courage to pursue it.

7. What are your plans? What are your goals for your education, career and entrepreneurial journey?

I aim to continue my studies in business and supply chain management. Additionally, I want to develop my entrepreneurial skills further to transform my ideas into successful and sustainable businesses.

8. Would you recommend a TVET college as a first choice for students pursuing their studies? What would you say to young people who are considering enrolling at a TVET college?

Yes, I would definitely recommend a TVET college to young people who are considering their study options. TVET colleges provide students with practical skills, knowledge and opportunities that can prepare them for the workplace and entrepreneurship. I would encourage young people to consider TVET colleges as a valuable pathway towards building a successful career and future.

9. August is Women’s Month. As a young woman and an entrepreneur, what message or advice would you like to share with other young women who have dreams of starting their own businesses or pursuing their goals?

I would encourage young women to believe in themselves, have confidence in their abilities and never be afraid to pursue their ambitions. Take up opportunities, learn from challenges and continue moving forward. Your background does not determine how far you can go. With determination, hard work and self-belief, you can achieve your goals.
