PE TVET COLLEGE COLLABORATES WITH NMU AND HUMAN SETTLEMENTS
Port Elizabeth TVET College was invited to participate in the NHBRC Symposium by the Human Settlements Department at Nelson Mandela University (NMU). The symposium provided an important platform to engage on critical challenges and opportunities within the building and civil environment, with particular attention to rural and urban human settlements.The engagement highlighted the important role that TVET Colleges play in the Human Settlements sector, particularly in developing the technical and practical skills required to support sustainable housing and infrastructure development.
The college and NMU have agreed to work toward developing a joint strategy for the participation of students and lecturers in the Human Settlements research agenda for 2026-2030. The strategy will seek to strengthen collaboration in areas such as applied research, innovation, work-integrated learning, industry partnerships, skills development and community-based projects.
PE TVET College’s participation positions the College as an important partner within the TVET space of the Human Settlements ecosystem, ensuring that the knowledge, practical skills and experience of TVET students and lecturers contribute meaningfully to addressing the building and civil engineering challenges facing rural and urban communities.
This collaboration between the college, NMU, and relevant Human Settlements stakeholders provides an opportunity to create a strong link between research, education, industry and community development while preparing students for the future skills requirements of the Human Settlements sector.
