WOMEN RISING: SKILLS, OPPORTUNITY, CHANGE
Meet Sisipho Mayo – a determined young professional committed to growth and empowerment.
“I am Sisipho Mayo, originally from Tshatshu Location in King William’s Town. I relocated to Gqeberha to pursue my academic and professional aspirations. As a proud alumna of PE TVET College, I am currently employed permanently as a Programme Administrator at Coega Development Corporation and am furthering my studies through a Postgraduate qualification in Supply Chain Management.
MY JOURNEY AT PE TVET COLLEGE
I completed the Management Assistant programme at Dower Campus from July 2017 to June 2019.
My experience at PE TVET College was both enriching and foundational to my personal and professional development. Motivated by a desire to receive practical, career-focused education that would open doors to real employment opportunities, I was drawn to the college’s strong reputation for producing skilled graduates and offering quality vocational training. The institution provided a supportive learning environment where I gained both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, equipping me for the world of work.
Beyond academics, the college instilled in me important values such as discipline, responsibility, and a dedication to lifelong learning. I am proud to be an alumna of the College and continue to carry the principles I learned there throughout my career.
INFLUENTIAL LECTURERS AND A SUPPORTIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
During my time at PE TVET College, I was fortunate to have had a smooth academic journey with minimal challenges, thanks in part to the supportive environment and my accommodation at the student hostel, which was conveniently located within walking distance of the campus. This allowed me to stay punctual, focused, and actively involved in campus life without the stress of daily commuting.
A key highlight of my experience was the dedication and passion of the lecturers, which had a profoundly positive impact on my confidence and academic growth. Two lecturers stood out. Ms Fortune, who taught ICP, had an engaging and practical teaching style that helped me understand the real-world relevance of our coursework, and Ms Mkoto, with her vibrant personality and firm approach to discipline, created a classroom environment that was both enjoyable and motivating. She believed in my potential and consistently encouraged me to work hard and remain focused on my goals. Their influence played a significant role in shaping my academic journey.
WHICH SKILLS OR LESSONS ACQUIRED DURING YOUR STUDIES DO YOU REGARD AS MOST VALUABLE?
While completing my internship at the Coega Development Corporation, I was simultaneously pursuing my BCom degree. This experience significantly enhanced my organisational and time management skills, enabling me to excel both academically and professionally.
Additionally, I refined my communication skills through group projects and presentations and became proficient in Microsoft Office—a skill that proved advantageous in the workplace, as I had received training in this area from N4 through to IP6.
Most importantly, I learnt the value of discipline, accountability, and continuous learning, which I continue to apply in all aspects of my life.
FURTHER STUDIES AND PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE
After completing my studies at PE TVET College, I pursued further education in supply chain management, obtaining a Bachelor of Commerce in Supply Chain and Operations Management from the University of South Africa (UNISA) between 2020 and 2024. In addition to my degree, I completed short courses in Supply Chain Management through the University of Cape Town and Strategies for Supply Chain Digitalisation through IMD Business School for Management and Leadership.
Currently, I am advancing my professional development by undertaking a Postgraduate qualification in Supply Chain Management with UNISA.
During my university studies, I developed crucial skills such as self-discipline, time management, research, critical thinking, perseverance, and goal-setting—skills essential for succeeding in UNISA’s distance learning environment and the professional world. Although the self-directed nature of distance learning presented challenges, I overcame them through determination and effective time management.
In addition to my academic pursuits, I completed several internships that greatly contributed to my professional growth. In 2019, I interned at the Kemsley Park Site at PE TVET College, where I learned the fundamentals of office administration. In 2020, I gained further administrative experience at Kritzinger and Rwexana Attorneys.
Finally, in 2021, I completed an internship at Coega Development Corporation, where I gained valuable experience working in a dynamic and fast-paced environment. These internships provided practical workplace exposure and laid a strong foundation for my career.
THE PRACTICAL ADVANTAGE OF TVET EDUCATION AND ITS IMPACT ON MY CAREER
A key advantage of a TVET education is its strong focus on practical, job-ready training, which contrasts with traditional academic paths that often emphasise theory.
Through internships and workplace exposure, TVET programmes equip students with relevant skills early on, giving them a competitive edge in the job market. Reflecting on my journey, I have no regrets about studying at a TVET College, as it facilitated a smooth transition into the workforce.
I am particularly grateful for the opportunity to join Coega Development Corporation as an intern even before completing my internship programme, thanks to the support of the Placement office at PE TVET College.
The practical experience and skills I acquired through these placements have prepared me well for my current role as Programme Administrator. TVET education provided me not only with a qualification but also with the confidence and capabilities to succeed professionally.
VISION FOR THE FUTURE AND REFLECTIONS ON MY JOURNEY
In the next five years, I aspire to advance within Supply Chain Management by securing a Junior Buyer position at Coega Development Corporation and completing a Master’s degree in either Supply Chain Management or Compliance Management.
Looking ahead to the next ten years, I aim to broaden my impact by participating in the Miss South Africa Beauty Pageant—a goal inspired by my journey of overcoming a stutter that once limited my involvement in public speaking and pageantry. Since relocating to Gqeberha, a turning point in my life, I was honoured to be named First Runner-Up in the Miss PE pageant in July 2024. This platform has enabled me to advocate for children, women, and education, with the hope that my story will inspire others to overcome their challenges.
My journey has been shaped by resilience, faith, and the steadfast support of those who believed in me. From my beginnings at a TVET College to permanent employment at Coega Development Corporation and ongoing postgraduate studies, I have learned the importance of hard work, humility, and staying true to my vision. Overcoming my speech challenges and embracing opportunities in beauty pageants has empowered me to use my voice to uplift others. While my journey continues, I am proud of my progress and remain optimistic about what lies ahead.
ADVICE FOR STUDENTS PREPARING FOR WORK OR FURTHER STUDIES
Embrace every learning opportunity—internships, volunteering, and hands-on experience build your professional foundation. Stay disciplined, manage your time well, and strive for excellence. Choose further studies that align with your passion and goals. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone; growth happens through challenges. Believe in yourself—hard work and resilience will lead you to success.
MESSAGE TO OTHER WOMEN – A CELEBRATION OF WOMANHOOD
Women’s Month is a powerful reminder of the strength, resilience, and remarkable contributions of women, both past and present. It is a time to celebrate the progress made while reflecting on the ongoing journey toward true equality, dignity, and opportunity for all women, regardless of their background or circumstances. For me, it is about honouring the sacrifices of those who paved the way and a personal call to use my voice, work, and presence to help build a future where every girl and woman feels empowered, seen, and supported.
To every woman reading this: never underestimate your worth or the power of your voice. You are capable of greatness, even in spaces where you may be overlooked or underestimated. Keep showing up, keep learning, and most importantly, keep lifting others as you rise. You are not alone—and your story matters,” said Sisipho
Her story is a reminder that the future belongs to those who dare to prepare for it.
We wish you all the best for your future endeavours.

“As a woman, I take pride in my resilience, uniqueness, and the strength that lies within me. I’ve learnt to adapt, to rise above challenges, and to keep moving forward with purpose and courage.
To all the women out there – know this: you are strong, you are capable, and you are worthy of every success. Empowered women empower others. Let’s be that source of strength and inspiration for one another. Let’s choose to uplift instead of criticising, to stand together instead of standing apart. We are powerful beyond measure – unbreakable, unstoppable, and full of potential.
Your voice matters. Your presence brings value. Never let anyone dim your light or make you feel small. Keep shining, keep striving, and never stop believing in yourself. Together, as women, we can break down barriers, challenge stereotypes, and shape a brighter, more inclusive future – not only for ourselves but for the generations of young women who will follow in our footsteps,” said Onwabile
