CIVIL ENGINEERING STUDENTS VISIT
AFRIMAT QUARRY
On Friday, 14 November 2025, a group of 26 N5 NATED Civil Engineering students from the Iqhayiya Campus visited the Afrimat Quarry Mine in Greenbushes.
They were accompanied by Mr J. Zivevekwa, who arranged the site visit, as well as Mr S. Gomo and Mr R. Nemukuyu.
The purpose of the visit was to expose the students to real-world technological applications, particularly those related to mechanical plant operations covered in Module 5 of their curriculum. The visit was intended to strengthen their theoretical knowledge through first-hand observation of industry practices.
Mr Hofman, Afrimat Regional Manager, led a guided tour of the quarry, demonstrating the full aggregate production process—starting with blasting and proceeding through grading, crushing, screening, washing, and the preparation of final products. Students were also introduced to various machinery in operation, including stone crushers, conveyor belts for aggregate transport, dumpers, tippers, crawlers, and the batch mixing plant.
Additionally, the students observed the production of ready-mix concrete using ready-mix trucks and pan mixers. They were shown how concrete testing is conducted, with demonstrations of both the workability test and the cube test for compressive strength.
The site visit provided valuable insights into industry operations and the practical application of construction technology. It also offered an opportunity for students to build professional connections that may support future industrial attachments required for their diplomas.
The students expressed great enthusiasm and appreciation, particularly for the chance to witness the manufacturing processes of construction aggregates and concrete products.
We further extend our sincere appreciation to Mr Thabang Molapo for ensuring safe travels for both staff and students.

Hloza Engineering supplies parts and/or services to companies such as Jendamark, Continental, and AutoX. Our students will also have opportunities to be placed in these partner companies for additional industry exposure.
The purpose of the visit was to ensure that the company meets the requirements for placing our students for work-based exposure.
Students from Iqhayiya Campus who are studying Occupational Programmes, Fitting and Turning Trade, Millwright Trade, Electrical Trade, and Toolmaking Trade will benefit from these placements.
Current Iqhayiya students are already placed at the company, and we are in the process of signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to formalise the partnership.
